Ascentiontide Prayers – Saturday

Alleluia! Christ the Lord ascendeth into heaven;
O come, let us adore Him! Alleluia!

Thou, on those who evermore
Thee confess and Thee Adore,
in Thy sevenfold gift, Descend;

Give Them Comfort when they die;
Give them Life with Thee on high;
Give them joys which never end. Amen

The Fruits of the Holy Ghost

The gifts of the Holy Ghost perfect the supernatural virtues by enabling us to practice them with greater docility to divine inspiration. As we grow in the knowledge and love of God under the direction of the Holy Ghost, our service becomes more sincere and generous, the practice of virtue more perfect. Such acts of virtue leave the heart filled with joy and consolation and are known as Fruits of the Holy Ghost. These Fruits in turn render the practice of virtue more attractive and become a powerful incentive for still greater efforts in the service of God, to serve Whom is to reign.

Come, O Holy Comforter, come in all your fullness and power. Enrich us in our poverty, inflame us in our feebleness, ravish our hearts with your love.

Come, O Divine Spirit, grant that my life may bring forth Thy heavenly fruits, Thy love (charity), joy, peace, longsuffering (patience), gentleness (benignity), goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: that I may never weary in the service of God, but by continued faithful submission to Thy inspiration may at the last be united eternally with Thee in the love of the Father and the Son. Amen.

Summary Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to accomplish Thy work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, vouchsafe that the same Holy Spirit may perfect in us, our souls and bodies, the work of Thy grace and Thy love.
Grant us…
…the Spirit of Wisdom to discern the ways of our own hearts, to perceive what is right and good, and to live the same.
…the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten our minds, fill our imaginations with the light of Thy divine truth, and show us the right place and proper relationship of all things,
…the Spirit of Counsel that we may ever seek and choose the surest way to please Thee, to serve others, to witness of Thee to the world, and have wise and healing counsel on our lips,
…the Spirit of Fortitude that we may patiently share in the suffering of Christ, daily bear our cross with Thee, and overcome with courage all temptation and our enemies which oppose our salvation,
…the Spirit of Knowledge that we may know Thee, the all powerful Father, the only wise God, Who is good and the Lover of mankind, and that we may know ourselves, and grow perfect in the science of the Saints,
…the Spirit of Piety that we may find the service of God sweet and amiable, and
…the Spirit of Fear that we may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him.

Mark me, dear Lord with the sign of Your true disciples, and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen.
