Dear Brethren of Christ the King,
As we engage in our abstinence and fasting intentions today let us visit the Scriptures to see why and how the Church of the Ages, Old and New Creation, fasted.
The first motivation is simply that we love God, we love the Lord Jesus. We love who He is, we love what He has accomplished for us, we love the fact that He is Love. We love God’s mission in the world. We earnestly and jealously desire the goodness of His righteous reign to fill the earth.
This week we will highlight the very pointed transcript Isaiah provides us regarding the fast in chapter 58 of the book which bears his name:
6 “ Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out;
When you see the naked, that you cover him,
And not hide yourself from your own flesh?
8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning,
Your healing shall spring forth speedily,
And your righteousness shall go before you;
The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
9 Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer;
You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
The fast of God’s choosing bears the mark of desire to see the the goodness and triumphant right of heaven invade our sinful earthly broken human condition. Fasting is a catalyst for the breaking forth of light and healing.
Fast well today as you answer the Church’s call, not because you must but because you can, and seek God for the healing of all that is sick and broken in our lives and the life of the world. Understand that you are an agent of healing especially when you make your life an answer to need in others.
Lord, be pleased to bless our imperfect fasts this day to the good of ourselves and others that Christ might be all in all. Amen.
May the love of Jesus enfold you today,
