We continue our journey through Holy Week with the Lord.
Today Jesus eats the Passover with his disciples! Today He comforts his disciples concerning what must now take place. Today He institutes for us the Holy Communion. Today He prays for us all in His high priestly prayer (John 17.) Tonight (really Friday morning) He will be betrayed, tonight He will be in agony at Gethsemane, tonight He will be arrested and deserted.
This day in Holy Week takes its name ‘Maundy’ from the Latin ‘dias mandatum’ or ‘the day of the commandment’. Today Jesus says, ” A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” John 13:34
During Lent and Holy Week, when we consider that “God so loved the world He gave his only begotten Son,” and we walk with Jesus through the horrors of this week, we begin to understand the true nature of this new commandment. As our understanding of Jesus’ love deepens so the standard for how we love each other heightens. “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. Romans 5:7-8
The implications of Jesus New Commandment are extreme and I believe perhaps our ultimate challenge in life. When I looked at my face in the mirror this morning I saw a man of great poverty with regards to love.
I hope to see you tonight for the Seder and Holy Communion. May God’s rich blessings fill your intentions today.
