Forced to Live a Double Life
How would that be possible when one has to lead a double or secret life?
Ahmed was just a school boy in Upper Egypt when he moved with his family into a large apartment building in Alexandria filled with both Christian and Muslim families. No one thought it strange that the little Muslim boy played with Christian friends, attended their church club and sometimes went to Sunday school. But when teenaged Ahmed began attending church and mosque prayers, he realized the God of Christianity was very different from the Allah of Islam.
After reading the Bible, he put his faith in Christ and was secretly baptized by a local priest. A week later, he was arrested and jailed for a year. He was never told why, but his faith grew strong in prison.
Four years later he was again arrested for several weeks, but he refused to renounce his faith in Christ. After he prayed to find a Christian wife, God led him to a young woman in Islamic attire who also believed in Christ, but dared not tell her family. Because both had Muslim I.D.s, they had a Muslim wedding, and when their children were born they had to register them as Muslims. “We have to live a double life,” Ahmed said. “On the inside we are Christians. But on the outside we act like Muslims.” Egypt allows no legal option for former Muslims like Ahmed and his wife to call themselves Christians.
Meditations and Prayer Points
• The church in Egypt has been in existence since the 1st century AD. Many today believe it is their responsibility to encourage evangelism. How would that be possible when one has to lead a double or secret life?
• Meditate on the prayer in Psalm 25: 5. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day. How might this prayer strengthen a Christian hiding their faith? Pray that God will teach them His ways.
• Fundamental Islamists cause discrimination on the grassroots level even though they are not in power. Pray that God’s power will instill courage in believers to stand firm in their faith.
• Strict government regulations prohibit church activities. What do you believe the government perceives to be the treat? Pray that the authorities will stop pressuring on Christians and that many more Muslims will turn to Christ.
