Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The Rogation Days were also called ‘Grass Days’ because of a custom seldom enjoined in our time. The three days leading to the Ascension were accompanied by meatless fasting. It is good to remember that prayer is somehow helped by fasting, especially in such a season of ‘solemn supplication’. It also creates a slightly greater anticipation of the feasting together Thursday evening.
This from our Gospel lesson Sunday John 16:23,
AMEN, amen, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my Name, He will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my Name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
A prayer for this Rogation Tuesday:
ALMIGHTY God, who hast blessed the earth that it should be fruitful and bring forth whatsoever is needful for the life of man, and hast commanded us to work with quietness, and eat our own bread; Bless the labours of the husbandman, and grant such seasonable weather that we may gather in the fruits of the earth, and ever rejoice in thy goodness, to the praise of thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord teach us to pray.
